The Department for Medieval Macedonian literature of The Institute of Macedonian literature had worked on projects under this title for more than 10 years. A Head of the department and a project manager was Prof. Vera Stojchevska-Antich, Ph.D. who worked together with Gjorgji Pop-Atanasov, Ph.D., Ilija Velev, Ph.D., Maja Jakimovska-Toshich, Ph.D. and Prof. Dobrila Milovska, Ph.D. The abovementioned title is a result of their joint activity, where the research results of many years done by the Slavists on the medieval Macedonian literature have been summarised. A specific emphasis was given to the period of Ss. Cyril and Methodius, manuscripts and texts created on the territory of Macedonia, than the activity of St. Clement from Ohrid, St. Naum from Ohrid, episcope Constantine from Bregalnica, Crnorizec Hrabar, presbyter Kozma. All the medieval literary genres have been represented: hagiographies, apocrypha, novels, short stories, historical acts, medieval schools etc. (top) |

The book is a result of the projects completed in the frames of the Department for Macedonian folk literature. Papers of the collaborators of the Department, namely Dimche Najchevski, Ph.D., Marko Kitevski, Ph.D., Lenka Tatarovska, Ph.D. and Iskra Nikolovska-Nejashmich, have been used for the completion of the book.
The title begins with the presentation of the development phases and the appearance of the folklore. First of all the oral poetry and its genres lyrical, lyrical-epic and epic songs are analyzed. Oral prose is represented in five classifications: 1. oral stories for animals and fables, 2. fairy tales, 3. novels, 4. anecdotes and 5. legends and traditions. The third chapter relates to the minor folklore genres. The section “Collectors of Macedonian folklore” reveals the paths of the collectors amongst whom Dimitrija and Konstantin Miladinovci, Partenija Zografski, Kuzman Shapkarev, Marko Cepenkov, Gjorgji Pulevski, Panajot Gjinoski. The fifth section detects the folklore elements in the contemporary literary works of Grigor Prlichev, Kocho Racin, Kole Nedelkovski, Mite Bogoevski, Slavko Janevski and Blazhe Koneski. (top)
